Walking into the Starbucks in Pineville filled Winland with unexpected nostalgia. She vividly remembered stepping off the train six months ago and walking into this town, which had served as a waystation for her and the refugees. Today, it felt like she was retracing her steps.

Now that the sun was up and she’d completed the first leg of her journey, she took advantage of being in a coffee shop by going to the counter and ordered a latte and muffin. She paid for it with the credit card she’d held onto for emergencies since leaving Turner’s DC mansion with the refugees.

This is weird. Actually paying for a cup of coffee and not knowing anything about the person making it for me.

Fortunately, Starbucks got more customers as Winland headed toward the bathrooms to the side of the shop. No one paid attention to a woman with a giant duffel bag over one shoulder and her hands full of her purchase. As she sidled toward the bathrooms, she took a tentative sip of her latte and wrinkled her nose.

Great. Thanks a lot, Moffetts. You’ve officially ruined everyone else’s coffee for me.

That made her laugh as she opened the Employees Only door by the bathrooms and slipped inside. The elevator to the train station almost made her spill her drink, but by the time she was in a train car and sitting on the familiar worn red velvet seats, she’d recovered enough from her six-month hiatus from civilization—human or magical—to automatically brace herself, her coffee, and the Bag when the electronic voice over the train’s speakers offered the one-minute countdown to departure.

Here we go. At least this time, I don’t have to worry about jostling one hundred and sixty-four magicals inside an enchanted bag.

She took one more quick sip of her coffee, then held it out in front of her to avoid spilling it in her lap when the train took off at the speed of light.
